The Big Orange Moose
About This Spot
Driving through the heart of Black River Falls, The Big Orange Moose stands as a charming waypoint—a place where the hum of the highway gives way to a more grounded, welcoming pace. At first glance, the bright sculpture of the moose offers a playful invitation that’s hard to miss, sparking curiosity and a moment to pause. Step inside, and the atmosphere unfolds into a friendly blend of casual dining and a lively local bar, both wrapped in a warmth that feels like a familiar pause on a journey rather than a rushed stop.
The space carries an inviting, unpretentious spirit. Whether you’re settling in for a burger that’s clearly crafted with care or sipping a cold beverage with friends, there’s a comforting sense of connection here—the kind that comes from a team who knows its regulars but welcomes newcomers with easy smiles. It’s a place where the bar and restaurant meld into one relaxed gathering spot, with friendly chatter rising around you and a pace that allows time to linger without feeling slow.
The Big Orange Moose is more than just a refueling station; it’s a modest hub where stories start and continue, anchored by hearty flavors and local character. Guests often find themselves drawn to the salad bar’s colorful variety or the satisfying juiciness of a freshly made burger, all enhanced by the attentive, approachable vibe behind the counter. And beyond the food and drink, the moose sculpture itself stands as a quiet cultural landmark—a familiar photo op that guests return to, marking trips north or south with a shared sense of tradition and discovery.
For those who stay a little longer, the bar’s inviting glow hints at evenings filled with simple pleasures: craft beers, cheese curds, and the kind of warmth that carries you through a night away from home. The Big Orange Moose is not seeking to impress with grandiosity, but rather to create a space that feels steady and genuine—a local spot where every visit quietly reminds you why some places just fit.

We always love stopping here on the way to Minnesota to take a picture with the Big Orange Moose! Good place to stop for gas and food too! Taco John’s and Subway here.

Great little restaurant! Burgers are phenomenal, cooked to perfection, juicy, full of flavor. Salad bar had a great variety of quality toppings. Friendly staff, but limited seating. Definitely worth the stop.

We were only there for the breakfast, but really wished that we weren't too sleepy to have spent some time in the bar the night before. Such a nice looking, inviting, and clean space. If you stay at this place, save some time to visit the orange moose!

A Phoenix rising from the ashes of the pandemic. That’s how I’d describe the Orange Moose Bar & Grill. About a dozen years ago the wife and I decided that instead of buying a Northwoods cabin, we’d patronize a host that could deliver the experience with fidelity. A handful of times annually in the intervening years the Orange Moose and It’s associated hotel have served that function. We’ve seen many changes at the Moose over the years, many during the trying days of the pandemic. While the overall trend has been toward reduced hours and services, I’m delighted to see the flicker of new life in the Orange Moose. This weekend we attended their New Years Eve party, which was well-planned, and provided to the opportunity to stay off the road on amateur night as we were able simply to walk to our room. The menu at the bar included their usual staples of pizza and fryer food, which was augmented with the daily specials of pulled pork or chicken, which was great to see. Other recent efforts include free pool night, and a forthcoming go at bingo Sundays. All told, the Orange Moose Bar & Grill is on the path to returning to its storied past – transitioning from its pandemic role as an amenity exclusively for hotel guest - to its former broader command as an attraction that drew the community and passers by alike to its shining beacon.

Had a great time here drinking beer and eating cheese curds. Tried to stop in again but we were too early. Great place right off of the interstate, friendly people.
